The microbiome is the invisible ecosystem that underlies the health of the whole organism. It cannot be forced. It can only be given conditions in which it thrives — including conditions for what seems difficult, unfamiliar, or unwanted. A healthy ecosystem does not exile what it cannot immediately classify. It makes room. It stays. It learns.
Breath functions the same way — a clear mirror, reflecting the full landscape of our emotional microbiome: what thrives, what hides, what has been waiting to be seen.
This session gathers in breath — not in isolation, but in pods. Small, intimate, relational. Because the deepest practice does not happen alone. It happens in contact: with the breath, with sound, with those beside you.
Through Anapana breath practice and collective sound attunement, we enter a shared field together. Breath is the ground. Voice, tone, resonance. The sound that arises in this room is not performed — it is what moves through us: toning, expression, the sounds that emotions make when they are finally allowed.
All of them. The ones we welcome and the ones we have learned to push away. The ones we label as wrong, as too much, as not safe to feel in company.
This session works with capacity: the slow, honest work of getting familiar with what is alive and present — without fixing, without fleeing. To attune to the full range of what moves through us. To discover that the emotion we labeled as bad is not an obstacle to the authentic self. It is part of the ecosystem. It belongs.
The authentic self is not uncovered in retreat from the world. It is uncovered in relationship — where what we carry can be witnessed, where the armor softens, where we grow in ways solitude alone cannot reach.
This is what community is for. This is what it has always been for.
Held by Jingfu, co-founder of Anapana Studios, in the tradition of breath and sound attunement informed by Zen, somatic practice, and contemplative lineage.
Anapana — the ancient Pali word for breath — is the practice of returning attention to the living breath, as it is. Not controlling it. Not optimizing it. Staying with what is alive and present. Breath attunement works with the breath as a clear mirror: reflecting the body's inner landscape, building capacity to remain with the full range of what arises, and returning us to what was never lost.
Sound attunement works with the healing intelligence of resonance, coherence, and dissonance — frequencies the body recognizes before the mind does. Through voice, tone, and live sound, we enter a shared vibrational field where the nervous system can reorganize, emotions can surface, and what has been held can begin to move. It is not performance. It is a field entered together.

Jingfu is co-founder of Anapana Studios in Portland, Oregon, where he holds breath and sound attunement, personal coaching, and longer-form interior work.
He noticed early a disconnection in his own breath — something most around him shared and no one named. His path moved through music, freediving, and Thai bodywork — lived study with the late Ajahn Pichest Boonthumme and others who taught the same lesson: that the body is its own teacher. He encountered the didgeridoo in New Zealand, then sat his first 10-day Vipassana. On the seventh day of his third retreat, the self dissolved — and awareness remained, pure, undivided, unmistakable — and a vow crystallized: that every human being carries this essence from birth. It is not created. It is returned to. And when contact is made, the whole world shifts.
Three years at a Korean Zen center followed, on the path to ordination — until that desire fell away. He walked out into the marketplace, into partnership, into fatherhood. None of it interrupted the practice. It deepened it.
His sound work attunes to resonance, coherence, and dissonance — not as something delivered, but as a field entered together. Frequency the body already knows.
